Doctrine #12: Divine Healing

Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security. [Jeremiah 33:6]

Jeremiah 33:6 shows us how God is committed to bringing restoration and renewal to His people. This verse invites us to understand God’s plan for redemption, promising not just physical healing but a complete restoration that includes soul well-being and divine prosperity. It’s an invitation to experience God’s abundant healing for those who trust in Him.

God has granted us an abundance of remarkable promises, and among them, divine healing stands as one of the most extraordinary. Nevertheless, healing is simultaneously one of the most profound and controversial topics, often ruffling many feathers. It’s beyond my comprehension—why we don’t simply believe and experience healing?!!!

I do acknowledge and recognize this mixed bag of understanding; however, I will stand firm on doctrine #1—the Word. Regardless of the disagreements surrounding healing, my steadfast belief anchors in the Word of God. If God declares healing, I will wholeheartedly embrace it. If He declares we have the power to lay hands on the sick and they will be healed, then my conviction is unshakeable.

When God declares that we possess the authority to perform works just like Jesus and even greater, then I stand firm in that belief. In the face of controversy or disagreement, my stance remains firm: God said it—I believe it.

We are going to take a look at some more scripture and what they say about divine healing – but first let’s review the benefits of Sound Doctrine.

The scriptures and concepts we’re about to discuss will obviously only scratch the surface of the vast topic of divine healing. My goal is to ignite a fire in those big girl panties where you will think differently about healing. Where it’s NOT based on what you see or hear, but your belief will be based on the transformative power of God’s Word.

FORGIVENESS AND HEALING

Jesus suffered sorrow, grief, and pain exclusively for us. He was perfect and holy and took on ALL of our sins and ALL of our sicknesses and diseases. Jesus became unrecognizable because of everything that He took for US.

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. [Isaiah 53:4-5]

For those who don’t realize that Isaiah 53:4 speaks of physical healing, an examination of these Hebrew words and Matthew 8:17 (talked about below) should make it very clear that Jesus not only died for our sins but also for our physical healing.

  • Forgiveness and Healing are intricately interwoven, like Siamese twins bound by their connection.
  • Forgiveness and Healing is God’s redemptive plan that addresses both the spiritual and physical aspects of healing.
  • Forgiveness and Healing were made possible through the death and resurrection of Jesus, this serves as the foundation of salvation, and restoration of our relationship with God, and physical health.
  • Healing from sickness and disease is a tangible expression of God’s compassion, reflecting His desire for complete well-being.
  • Forgiveness of sin and healing from sickness are like inseparable twins in the gospel. They show us that God’s redemption isn’t just about spiritual matters; it touches every part of our lives.
  • Forgiveness and Healing are inseparable, as this powerful truth isn’t just something to know; it challenges us to see the gospel in its fullness.
  • Forgiveness and Healing – these Siamese twins of the gospel speak to a comprehensive spiritual redemption and complete healing in our physical bodies.
  • Forgiveness and Healing, you will see throughout the scriptures that where sin abounds, healing is required.

YOU ARE HEALED

There were doctors in James’ day. Yet James didn’t tell the believers to call for the doctor or those who practiced holistic medicine; he told them to call for the elders of the church and get prayer, and the prayer of faith would heal the sick.

Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. [James 5:14-16]

This is very contrary to what most churches do today. If believers in the typical church today asked their elders to pray for them, most elders of the church would ask them what the doctor says about their sickness or would send them to a doctor. Or they would pray, oh God if it’s your will to heal… This is not what this scripture is instructing us to do.

No, it’s not a sin to go to a doctor. We thank God for doctors because most “Christians” would die because they don’t trust God for healing. What James is trying to emphasize is that our first line of defense against sickness should be prayer and belief in healing. Believing God for our healing shouldn’t be something we do as the last resort or in combination with what the doctor can do. We should turn to the Lord first.

When this is done in faith, the Lord will heal the sick and forgive any sin that may have occasioned the sickness. The oil that we anoint the sick with is symbolic. It symbolized the power of the Holy Spirit. It has no healing power. The power to heal is in our belief in Jesus Christ.

  • Healing is an essential part of the full gospel and good news!
  • Healing should be an integral part of every believer’s life.
  • Healing goes beyond spiritual restoration it also encompasses the physical body.
  • Healing at its core is not only forgiveness of sins but a resounding promise of complete redemption in the entire body.
  • Healing can be immediate, or it can be an ongoing transformative process.
  • Healing becomes essential for believers, marking a profound and inseparable connection between belief and the comprehensive well-being that the gospel offers.

SICKNESS AND DISEASE ARE GONE

The removal of sickness and disease is not just a possibility or a pie-in-the-sky wish; It is a gracious gift given to believers by God Himself.

When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him. That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick. This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said, He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases. [Matthew 8:14-17]

  • The elimination of sickness and disease is a privileged provision and a tangible expression of God’s love and care for those who trust in Him.
  • The elimination or prevention of sickness and disease is a covenant right for believers secured through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
  • The elimination or prevention of sickness and disease resonates throughout the entire Bible, affirming that divine health is not a distant dream but a present reality accessible to those who embrace their identity as children of God.
  • The elimination or prevention of sickness and disease is a gift, a privilege, and a covenant right of every believer that should be claimed.

DELIVERED FROM SICKNESS

The atonement, which is the cornerstone of the believer’s doctrine, not only secures salvation but extends its transformational power to deliverance from sickness.

He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. [1 Peter 2:24]

Through the redemptive work of Jesus on the cross, believers inherit not only spiritual salvation but also the promise of physical healing.

  • We are delivered from sickness through the atonement of Jesus Christ.
  • The atonement is a comprehensive provision, addressing the entirety of human brokenness which is both spiritual and physical.
  • We are delivered from sickness by receiving the gift of salvation and forgiveness.
  • We are delivered from sickness because Jesus took ALL sickness on that cross.
  • We are delivered from sickness, we ARE healed, and we ARE well because Jesus paid for ALL sickness and diseases, through His death.
  • We are delivered from sickness through Jesus’ sacrificial act, He not only bore our sins but also carried our infirmities, providing healing for both our body and soul.
  • We are delivered from sickness based on foundational scriptures with the promise of the atonement and physical wholeness made available through the atoning work of Christ.

There are over 500 scriptures on healing in the Word, so dig deeper and find more as we touched base on only a few.

I’m going to end with a message that I love in Mark when Jesus was walking through massive crowds of people. Most likely people were bumping into Him and touching Him as He squeezed through the crowds. However, when someone BELIEVED they could be healed by merely touching the hem of His garment – He felt that power being released to her… This clearly shows that it is NOT by our good works or wishful thinking that we are healed, BUT we are healed ONLY through the majestic power of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” His disciples said to him, look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, Who touched me? But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over. [Mark 5:30-34]
