How to Hear God’s Voice

Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence. [Ephesians 3:12]

Hearing from God is a deeply personal and profound experience that we as believers should desire. What is amazing is God has given us the ability to have a direct connection with Him because of Jesus. We can come to Him boldly and He WILL speak to us!

  • Fear is NEVER from God
  • Doubt is NEVER from God
  • Confusion is NEVER from God
  • Discouragement is NEVER from God
  • Guilt and condemnation are NEVER from God

Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God. [John 8:47]

Let’s just say our modern theology believes people can believe in the Lord and be saved, yet never mature to a place where they hear God’s voice. This is in direct opposition to what Jesus was saying. Unfortunately, there are a lot of professing believers who don’t hear from God or experience any of His blessings in their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: there is more depth and details on the podcast, this is only an outline!

  1. RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD THROUGH HIS WORD
    • Our relationship with God is nurtured through His Word.
    • Everything needs to be run through the Word.

The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever. [Psalm 119:160]

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. [2 Timothy 3:16-17]

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. [Romans 10:17]

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. [Hebrews 4:12]

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. [James 1:22]

  1. ALLOW PEACE TO BE YOUR GUIDE
    • Where there is peace, it is God.
    • Peace is a safety net and filter.
    • Where there isn’t peace, it is NOT God

Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, This is the way you should go, whether to the right or to the left. [Isaiah 30:21]

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. [John 10:27]

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. [John 14:26]

I listen carefully to what God the Lord is saying, for he speaks peace to his faithful people. But let them not return to their foolish ways. [Psalm 85:8]

  1. HAVE A HEART YIELDED AND SENSITIVE TO HEAR GOD
    • Having a hardened heart gets in the way of hearing God.
    • The buts and never get in the way of hearing God.
    • Not being open gets in the way of hearing God.

So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts. [Hebrews 4:7]

That is why the Holy Spirit says, Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness. There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years. So I was angry with them, and I said, Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them. So in my anger I took an oath: They will never enter my place of rest. Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. Remember what it says: Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled. [Hebrews 3:7-15]

  1. Place a greater value on the still small voice vs the supernatural ways that God speaks
    • It’s immature to want anything but the still small voice of God.
    • It’s a strong inward knowing.
    • Strong inward desire.

Go out and stand before me on the mountain, the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. [1 Kings 19:11-12]

Love this scripture through the wind, God did not speak; through the earthquake, God did not speak; through the fire, God did not speak; it was through His still small voice when it was quiet that He spoke…

IF YOU DON’T HEAR FROM GOD, IT’S BECAUSE YOU DON’T NEED TO… HE HAS ALREADY SPOKEN, GO BACK TO WHAT HE LAST SHOWED YOU TO DO….
