Power of God’s Spoken Word

The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life [John 6:63]

As promised, we are going to dig more into the power of the spoken word, because every word that is spoken has power. God’s word, our words, words we hear, and words people say to us bring life or death. This foundational truth we need to understand and believe God’s word before we can use authority or power over any other words.

When God speaks, he always speaks LIFE to us, and it has supernatural power. We live in a society where our words don’t mean much anymore. Years ago, we used to be able to give our word and our word was a contract; people would do what they say. Not so much today, unless we are walking in Godly integrity. Therefore, many believers do not take God’s word seriously or believe that there is power in words. Personally, I don’t understand, just by looking this one scripture.

The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word and all the stars were born. [Psalm 33:6]

Let’s journey back into history in Genesis 1 to explore how things were initially formed and to demonstrate the power of God’s spoken word. (go back and read the details of each of these God said statements, as I did not include the entirety of the scriptures)

In the beginning, God made from nothing the heavens and the earth. The earth was an empty waste and darkness was over the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was moving over the top of the waters.

Then God said
, Let there be light, and there was light. God saw that the light was good.
Then God said, Let there be an open space between the waters. Let it divide waters from waters.
Then God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered into one place. Let the dry land be seen. And it was so.
Then God said, Let plants grow from the earth, plants that have seeds. Let fruit trees grow on the earth that bring their kind of fruit with their own seeds. And it was so
Then God said, Let there be lights in the open space of the heavens to divide day from night. And it was so.
Then God said, Let the waters be full of living things. Let birds fly above the earth in the open space of the heavens. And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, Let the earth bring into being living things after their kind: Cattle and things that move upon the ground, and wild animals of the earth after their kind. And it was so.
Then God said, Let Us make man like Us and let him be head over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over everything that moves on the ground.
Then God said, See, I have given you every plant that gives seeds that is on the earth, and every tree that has fruit that gives seeds. They will be food for you.

The earth was created by words, all the animals were created by his words, all the plants were created by his words, we were created by His words, every living thing was created by God’s spoken word.

From the very beginning of time, God spoke everything we needed into existence. He spoke life into every living thing and gave them the ability to reproduce through seed. Once God completed His work after seven days He was done. Going forward everything was given the ability to reproduce through SEED.

Then God said, Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—everything that has life.  And that is what happened. [Genesis 1:27-30]

The word seed is important because it’s the flowering plant’s unit of reproduction, it is capable of developing into another such plant, and a seed is a source of further growth and development.

God’s word is SEED, every word spoken is a SEED. This is why words have either life or death within them. Words have so much power in them because they are SEEDS.

The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences. [Proverbs 18:21]

But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. [Matthew 15:18]

Let me give you an example of what I mean. When you sense you may have potential symptoms of a cold you can choose the words you speak – you can choose to speak life, or you can choose to speak death.

DEATH: I think I’m coming down with a cold (you have put water on that seed). Think I have a sore throat (you put nutrients on that seed). Oh goodness, this may turn into the flu (you nurture this seedling into a plant). I’m so tired, I’m just going to go to bed for a few days until I feel better (you are watering this little plant to continue to grow). Oh, wonder if I have COVID, maybe I should get a test (goodness it’s become another propagating plant).

If you speak negative words, you will nurture yourself right into being sick, and then it continues to reproduce into one problem after another.

LIFE: Symptoms you have no authority in my body, I command you leave right now in Jesus’ name(you essentially kill that seed). No further growth will continue with this plant, and no sickness can enter your body.

In this example, the words of life have the power to stop the sickness because you are speaking GOD’s Word to the problem (the mountain).

You must serve only the Lord your God. If you do, Iwill bless you with food and water, and I will protect you from illness. [Exodus 23:25]

He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. [1 Peter 2:24]

To understand how this operates, we must KNOW what God’s word says. Then we need to believe that His Word is 100% true. Also, we need to recognize that God’s word is irrevocable, God never changes his mind, He always does what He says He will do, and He cannot lie.

His spoken word is the rock-solid firm foundation that we stand on. His words are what we as believers base our entire lives on. Go back to the Hebrews 4:2 which talks about God sustaining all things by his powerful word. If God ever changed his mind or went back on his Word, it would put the entire universe into chaos, andthe stars and sun would fall out of the sky. The seas would overflow, and things would go back to that empty waste and darkness before God spoke life.

Every word spoken in the bible has power and every promise given in the bible is for us. God cannot lie – everything God says is a covenant or a contract. God never says he will do something and not follow through with it.

So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. [Hebrews 6:18]

Please note this is only a small piece of understanding God’s word, but I pray this will give you a firm foundation to stand on.

God’s Word is TRUTH
God’s Word is UNSHAKABLE
God’s Word CANNOT BE REVOKED
God’s Word is a COVENANT
God’s Word is an OATH
God’s Word is LIFE
God’s Word is TRUTH
God’s Word is UNCHANGEABLE
God’s Word is SEED

Let’s wrap up this session of God’s word by going back to the concept of seeds.

GOD’S WORD IS SEED. This is why it’s important to pay attention and be discerning about what is being taught when you listen to others and what seeds you allow to grow in your heart, mind, and soul.

Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. [1 John 4:1]

Be present with the Holy Spirit and allow him to guide you into the truth as you read the word or listen. When you are reading the bible consistently you are sowing good seeds into the soil of your heart and mind. This is how we understand God and how we nurture our relationship with God almighty is by being in His word. Many people hear the word or skim over the words and their seeds have different effects.

As we wrap up today’s teaching let’s take a partial deep dive into the Parable of the Farmer Scattering Seed to emphasize the power of God’s spoken word.

One day Jesus told a story in the form of a parable to a large crowd that had gathered from many towns to hear him:

A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field,

  • Some seed fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it.
  • Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture.
  • Other seed fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants.
  • Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!

When he had said this, he called out, Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.

His disciples asked him what this parable meant.

He replied you are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. we as believers are given the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom on scriptures.

But I use parables to teach the others (believers who are still babies) so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled:

When they look, (people that are not listening to the Holy Spirit) they won’t really see. When they hear, they won’t understand.

This is the meaning of the parable: THE SEED IS GOD’S WORD.

The seeds that fell on the footpath represent those who hear the message, only to have the devil come and take it away from their hearts and prevent them from believing and being saved.

This is about new believers who don’t know there is an enemy, and their minds can easily be deceived by the devil by whispering lies to tell them they are not saved, reminding them of their past failures, by having friends make fun of them, and of course planting doubt, confusion, or any other type of deceitful tactic. These are the seeds that were stepped on or ate by the birds.

The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation.

This is about believers who are all in for God, God is good, praying. and it appears they are walking they walk; until something happens that rocks their world. Then they begin to doubt and blame God, they become bitter, they are not in the word, their prayers are begging God, and eventually they walk away. These are the seeds that began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture.

The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches, and pleasures of this life. And so, they never grow into maturity.

This is about believers who are not in the word so they are lukewarm and dabbling with things that non-believers do, such as living with someone outside of marriage, drinking, swearing, anger issues, smoking, gambling, distorting the word to conform to their lifestyle to where it has no power, praying fluffy prayers, and they hang with people that are not a good influence on them. They are living according to their selfish desires vs what the word of God says. These are the seeds that fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants.

And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.

This is about believers who commit their lives wholly to God as a living sacrifice, they are committed to being in the word daily, they have intentional prayer time, they believe every word God says, they put God first in all that they do, they take hold of the promises, they use their authority to rebuke the enemy, and they trust only in the leading of the Holy Spirit not in themselves. These are the seeds that grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!
