Think About What You Are Thinking About

For as he (she) thinketh in his (her) heart, so is he (she) [Proverbs 23:7a KJV].

QUOTE: Think thoughts that serve you instead of ones that harm you; think thoughts that give you power versus thoughts that drain you. THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT (Cathy Fraser)

What we think today, tomorrow, next week, and next month will mold our lives and determine our future because we are guided by our thoughts, especially the thoughts that we have about ourselves.

What did you think about when you first woke up this morning? Answer this honestly because it will serve you well if you do. Did you even think about what you thought about this morning before I asked you? What we THINK about and what we THINK about ourselves is so critical. However, most people don’t actually think about what they are thinking about, they simply meander through life letting whatever happens happen – they never THINK.

We all know of people who sadly are no longer with us because for whatever reason they decided that life was no longer worth living. We don’t know exactly what they were thinking but I’m guessing they were in incomprehensible pain and most likely were not able to see any other way out, but to end their life. I mention this because we are where we are in our lives because of our thoughts. We are where we want to be, whether we want to admit this or not, whether we like it or not, because of our thoughts (um, not sure I always like this fact).

That’s how powerful our thoughts are, which this scripture clearly states: “The tongue has the power of life and death” (Proverbs 18:21). We are talking on the extreme end of things, but unfortunately, I have some insight into that extreme thinking and can relate to what someone may have felt (and thought) who has taken their life. Because for me, it was my thinking that determined how my day would go or if I could even get out of bed. Through my biscuit flying season, on a daily basis I had to fight off those negative and even suicidal thoughts. I had to intentionally every single minute of the day think I AM WHO GOD SAYS I AM. I had to consciously say, that my circumstances DO NOT determine who I am or, that my present situation does not define my destiny, I am who GOD says I am.

I had to make a decision, moment by moment, to catch myself when a negative thought would come and intentionally change my thinking. Honestly, it was completely exhausting because I was literally fighting for my life. However, if I had allowed my thoughts to control my life instead of me controlling my thoughts, I really don’t believe we would be on this hike here today. Again, I share this to emphasize how important our thoughts are and how important it is to check what we are thinking especially what we are thinking about ourselves.

There is a fine line here that I want to caution you about. There is a lot of teaching on controlling your destiny with your thoughts, thinking your way into millions, thinking your way into health, thinking this and you will get that. There is some truth in this teaching, but there is a fine line that can be very easily crossed if you are not aware. I know this because I did cross that line myself.

We need to check every thought or teaching with what Scripture says. Always THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT. This thinking, that “I” can do anything, “I” can make things happen, “I” can build any business, “I can create wealth.” The problem is that it’s all about “I” “I” “I.” Yes, I believed that “I” could accomplish and do anything if I just thought the right thoughts.

When the truth of the matter is, that we can only do ANYTHING through the help of the Lord, not through our strength. I couldn’t create the life I wanted any more than I could change those awful thoughts, without my relationship with the Lord. So, to clarify, when I talk about changing our thinking or thinking the right things, it’s all based on what the Word of God says and not what the world says.

We need to understand this difference. Studying the mind and how things work is fascinating, and if you are anything like me you can easily go too far without even realizing you’ve crossed that fine line which can be very dangerous. It’s dangerous because when we think we have more power than God or don’t even think we need God, then we are already in trouble.

TAWYATA: Think on what God’s Word says about YOU. What we think does matter because our thoughts do have power. Thinking about what you are thinking about applies to EVERY single thought and action we make in our lives. You WILL become what you think about (it’s a law), as it says in Proverbs 23:7. THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT.
