What Does Surrender and Being a Living Sacrifice Mean?

Today, we’re diving into one of the most challenging and maybe one the least favorite calls to action for a believer. We are called to be a living sacrifice unto the Lord, but this is also one of the most powerful things we can do.

Romans 12:1 And so, dear [brothers and] sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice, the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.

When Paul wrote these scriptures, sacrifices involved offering something valuable to God often an animal on an altar. That was under the old covenant, we are now under the new and better covenant. Paul isn’t implying that we offer that same type of a dead sacrifice.

Being a living sacrifice isn’t just about going to church or doing good deeds. It’s a call to a lifestyle of complete surrender to the Lord. Saying Lord, not my will or my way, but your will Lord. It’s trusting that God knows what is best for us better than we do. Being a living sacrifice is also living a lifestyle that honors God in everything we say and do.

Surrender isn’t about giving up; it’s about letting go of the control we think we have in our lives and trusting God’s perfect plan to be played out instead. Yes, I know, easier said than done. Isn’t this our constant daily battle, doing what we think is best for our lives or listening to that quiet yet powerful voice of the Lord. [like we learned in the last video]

What these scriptures are showing us as we should desire to live our lives in a way that honors God every single day. Being a living sacrifice goes beyond simply offering up parts of ourselves; it means fully surrendering our will, our desires, our dreams, and even our vision on how we think our lives should look. It’s an intentional decision to lay everything at the feet of Jesus and declare, “Not my will, but Your will be done, Lord.”

This surrender isn’t from obligation but rather out of deep gratitude and love. We choose to do this because of the immeasurable grace, love, and sacrifice Jesus has shown us. Jesus gave His very life so that we might truly live, be free, be forgiven, and be full of purpose and vision.

[Romans 12:2] Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Our response of offering our lives as a living and holy sacrifice becomes not just an act of worship but a reflection of our trust in His perfect plan and His unfailing love.

As a true believer, in our spirit we become a totally new person and being a living sacrifice is simply a byproduct that should also be reflected in our lifestyle.

2 Corinthians 5:16-17 So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

There should be an obvious difference in your life as a believer vs someone who does not know the Lord. This type of lifestyle is imperative in regard to your journey of knowing and walking out your God given vision.

The Connection Between Surrender and Freedom

Girlfriend, there is freedom in being a living sacrifice. When we try to do things on our own or our way there is frustration, fear, anxiety and great strive to make things happen.

I know this all too well. As a serial entrepreneur I was always trying to maintain that six figure income, become better at what I was doing, make more money, do everything myself… without any guidance from the Holy Spirit and it about killed me.

Being that living sacrifice and surrendering to God’s brings so much peace, comfort, joy, and best thing of all there is no striving. When we are in God’s perfect will and living out His vision; He will provide, He will open doors only He can open, He will bring the promotion, the money and whatever else is needed to walk that vision out.

Isaiah 26:3-4 You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.

• Trusting God with your life as a living sacrifice brings perfect peace.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take

• Trusting God with your life brings clarity and provision along the way.

John 15:5 Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

• Staying connected to God through surrender ensures fruitful and abundant living.

Five Practical Ways to Be a Living Sacrifice Which Brings Freedom, Power and Vision For Your Life!  

These principles are built on the foundation of three things we talked about in our previous video [Solo Women-You Have An Unfair Advantage]. Take time in His Presence, Immerse Yourself in the Word, Journal and Listen.

Seek God’s Will First

Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

• If we could somehow just follow this one scripture our lives would be so much easier and fruitful
• Sacrifice means putting His plans above our own.
• When we make God our priority, surrendering to Him, He promises to provide for our needs.
• Please note this scripture reminds us to live righteously

Surrender Your Daily Decisions

1 Peter 5:6-7 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of   God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you

• Every choice, big or small, can honor God.
• Ask, before saying or doing something does this bring Him glory?
• Sacrificing worry and control to God leads to peace beyond comprehension.

Release Control Daily

Psalm 40:8 I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.

• Pray Lord, Not my will, but Yours be done.
• A declaration of joy and commitment to living in alignment with God’s will.
• Let go of one small thing each moment, each day

Take Small Obedient Steps

Jeremiah 10:23 I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course. [our own steps]

• Follow through on what God has already shown you.
• Recognizing that our lives belong to God and we submit to His direction and guidance
• One step at a time, one assignment at a time

Honor God With Your Body

Romans 12:1 And so, dear sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice, the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.

• This is about giving all of yourself to God
• Your health, your actions, and your words
• This also includes your sex life
